Due February 20

Read Kurt Vonnegut’s “EPICAC,” a short story available under the “Lit Readings” tab on the course website. Print the story off.

As you read, consider how the story describes the character you have been assigned: either the narrator or EPICAC. You could consider questions such as

  • What is their purpose or role?
  • What do they look like?
  • What are their strengths/weaknesses?
  • What kinds of things do they like to do?
  • How would you describe their personality?

Highlight or underline all the passages in the story that give us this information. Then based on one or more of the passages you marked, choose a physical object that represents something about your character’s personality. Bring the item to class and be prepared to explain what, specifically, you intend the object to represent.

Bring the item to class, along with your marked-up copy of the story.

I’m not sure what you mean about bringing an object. Can you give me an example? In “Westminster Abbey,” we learned that the main character is proud and very protective of her wealth; she puts a lot of stock in being upper class. To represent this side of her personality, we could choose an object such as a credit card or a wallet, both of which represent the idea of having a lot of money.

But wait, Ms. VB! You’ve said we would be assigned a character. How do I know which character to do?

9.20 AM: If your last name starts with A-N, your character is EPICAC. If your last name starts with O-Z, your character is the narrator.

2.30 PM: If your last name starts with A-M, your character is EPICAC. If your last name starts with N-Z, your character is the narrator.

This division will ensure that we have roughly an equal number of students studying each character.

Also an important note: Remember, you will have 1) your thesis statement, 2) a basic outline, and 3) your project choice (e.g. collage, soundtrack, brown bag, etc) due on Wednesday, February 22. Be thinking about this now!
