Read “My Last Duchess,” by Robert Browning, which begins on page 660 of your blue books. The person talking is a duke. The duke has been married before, and since his wife is no longer around, he wants to take the count’s daughter as a second wife. In the poem, the duke describes his first wife, the last or previous duchess, to the count.
Choose either the duke or the duke’s first wife to study, and make at least five observations about how the poem characterizes this person. What do they look like? What is their personality? Their character?
Write your points down in full sentences and submit them in your homework folder. Be careful! The situation that the duke describes is not as straightforward or clear as it may seem on first glance.
We’re going to have so much fun discussing this poem in class. 🙂
